Buhari made the pledge during a maiden visit at the United Nations office in Kenyan Capital Nairobi in Conclusion of his three day state visit to East African Nation.
He said the cleaning of the Niger Delta, which one of the world’s most polluted wetlands due to frequent oil spills from pipelines that litter the region contaminating its rivers and creeks is part of his administration’s resolve to implement the United Nations Environmental Programme’s (Unep) recommendations.
“When I came into office on May 29, 2015, one of the first tasks I carried out was to authorise the implementation of the recommendations of Unep for the clean-up of Ogoniland”, he said
“The devastation caused by oil spillage has destroyed lives and livelihoods and is one of the reasons people in that region lost faith in government and resorted to criminal activities. The action our government took to implement Unep’s recommendations has given the indigenes hope.” he added.Tags: Buhari in kenya Latest Nigeria news Niger delta Oil and gas news Nigeria Oil spills in Nigeria UNEP
